SSLS Weekly Tip / Laser Welding: Which aluminium wire you would use when laser welding? When it comes to laser welding, the choice of aluminum alloy depends on several factors, including weldability, the specific application, and the desired properties of the welded joint.4000 series aluminum alloys, which include aluminum-silicon alloys, are generally considered good for laser welding. The silicon content helps reduce the melting point and improve fluidity, resulting in better weldability.5000 series aluminum alloys, containing magnesium, are also suitable for laser welding. They have good corrosion resistance and strength, but care must be taken to avoid cracking due to high thermal expansion and contraction.The 6000 series aluminum alloys can be more challenging to laser weld compared to the 4000 and 5000 series. These alloys can be prone to hot cracking during welding due to the presence of both magnesium and silicon. However, with proper welding techniques and parameters, successful laser welding of 6000 series alloys is possible.Overall, 4000 series is generally preferred for laser welding due to its better weldability. 5000 series is also a good choice, but 6000 series requires more careful control during the welding process to avoid issues. Also you should choose the wire thickness as AL wisely as it is softer than MS and SS, it is better to use anything thicker than 1.0 mm.
